BBH Blends: Right Back to the Roots

If you’ve been following me for a while, you may have noticed that I’ve been rocking protective styles LESS and wearing my curls free a lot MORE! Usually it’s the other way around, right? Especially in the winter months – moisture is key so, normally, tucking your hair away is the way to do it. Well, not this time and not for me! I’m learning to embrace my curls and how to care for them rather than hiding them away.
This means that the products I use are a lot more important. If my curls are going to withstand wind, rain, hail and SNOW, they have to be packed with moisture and protected from the elements. This is something I struggle with in summer months using my usual arsenal of hair products but since taking on my mission to support black owned brands. It’s been a breeze!
BBH Blends has restored the shine in my strands, the moisture in my coils and my confidence in my fro.
I have low porosity hair so I had pretty much accepted that my hair was destined to be dry and that conditioner would always just sit on top of my strands. I was a bit sceptical when I felt the consistency of the leave in and it was light and creamy – I’m used to thick, heavy conditioners, but I was pleasantly surprised when it penetrated my strands in a matter of seconds! I posted a video of this on my Instagram and you can see the smile appear on my face – if you haven’t seen it, check it out! It requires very little effort to work it in and it had great slip too. Detangling is usually my worst nightmare but it was a dream, even without the use of a comb, and the light floral scent is beautiful! Something a bit different to what I’m used to.
I sealed in the moisture with the Happy Hair Butter which is slightly heavier in consistency but still not so much that my hair felt weighed down. It works well as a mid-week boost if you’re wearing loose styles or to seal and protect your ends.
What I love most about these products is how easily they are refreshed with water. One week I misted and rebraided my hair to refresh my braid out and on a different occasion I used the baggy method on a wash and go; I didn’t have to add more product to revive either of these styles. A little bit goes a long way; so, I had less build up on both wash days. The success I’ve had with these products has given me the confidence to be more experimental and more adventurous with my styles - my hair feels nourished and strong so there’s nothing stopping me from trying new things. Especially not the weather!
As I’m sure you’re aware from previous posts, my mission isn’t only centred around the products I use, passion and integrity are key. The founder of BBH Blends, Luxi Brown, has a passion for natural hair care that goes back to her childhood. Born and bred in West Africa, handmade creams and butters were customary and making them with her grandmother was routine.
After a stint of relaxing her hair and wearing extensions and wigs, it made sense for her to go right back to her roots and use her family recipes to nurse her hair back to health. Nothing else on the market at the time was as effective for her and this was apparent to friends and family members who started to buy the creams to use on their own hair. This brought the brand to life and gifted us with the natural, handmade hair care that I’ve already had the privilege of using. The integrity of this brand is found in the ingredients, all of which are natural and fair trade – sourced both in the UK and Ghana; as well as the artwork which was created by and bought from black artists for use on the product labelling.
It has been a pleasure get to know this brand and have the opportunity to turn my words into actions. I reached out to them on Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/BBHBlends but you can also follow them on Instagram @bbhblends or find them at www.bbhblends.com where you can enjoy 20% off with my discount code “CCDC18”.
Until next time curlfriends
Love, Chlo xx
