Curly By Nature: Straightforward Hair Care
I'm sure any naturalistas will testify that natural hair comes with a lot of trial and error. My healthy hair journey hasn’t been without its twists and turns, but in recent months it has led me right to the Curly By Nature natural hair salon in North London. For the past 6 years or so, I have been navigating my kinks and coils myself but in March I let Klerissa McDonald take the wheel.
For many of us, our natural hair is not just a fashion statement or an aesthetic. It is a symbol of self-care, our personality and, in my case, a symbol of power and defiance of mainstream beauty standards. This means that choosing a hairdresser, or even the decision to go to a hair salon, is not one that's taken lightly. However, my skepticism and unease were met with confidence and reassurance at the Curly By Nature salon.

The Care Clinic starts with a hair consultation and of course, for a self-confessed know-it-all like me, this was the perfect opportunity to show off everything I've learned. It was a chance to test the waters and build up a rapport with the lady who was about to have her hands in my hair. If you have any queries regarding natural hair, this also the time to raise them. The consultation enables Klerissa to tailor her service to meet your needs and preferences.
The Care Clinic starts with the detangling process, during which no styling tools were used. I would usually finger detangle my hair and this wash day was no different. The service also includes a hair and scalp detox, a scalp massage and a customised steam treatment. I had a moisture treatment as my hair was a lot drier than usual and a precision trim without the use of a blow drier or any heat styling tools.
The entire process was all the fun of hanging out with a friend, with none of the stress of wash day. All of my anxiety about going to a hair salon washed away right from the start. I was the centre of the experience and my needs came above all else. It was also a relief not to have to worry about the products being used on my hair. Reading product labels comes with the natural hair territory and the Curly By Nature range definitely passes the bar.
Klerissa used the Moisture Shampoo and Intensive Conditioning Mask for my detox and steam, followed by Shea Luxe, the Hair Repair Oil and the Nourishing Gloss Balm for styling. Each product had its own unique but subtle scent which represented the quality of this brand perfectly. Purpose has been prioritsed ahead of aesthetics and gimmicks, particularly with the Hair Repair Oil. This is a blend of 21 oils guaranteed to benefit your hair and scalp. It can be used for hot oil treatments, scalp massages, sealing and as a heat protectant. The Shea Luxe is also multi-purpose and can be used for hair and body but Klerissa used it for the twist-cornrow style pictured below.
